Woodworking Trim for Fireplaces

Working with wood is always a fun project because you get your mind loose and creative juices flowing. It is important to select a good variety of wood so you can have a great looking finish job. Make sure that your wood is in contrast with the other materials that are in the same room as the fireplace.

It is important to figure out what type of design and trim you will be creating. Tools needed are a hammer, a level, a drill, drill bits, a screw driver, a chisel, a chop saw, screws, nails, glue, a pry bar and scrap lumber. Before starting the project make sure that the area is clear of any furniture and the floor is covered with a drop cloth to protect the surface. Remove all lumber and parts of old fireplace not required for the new design. Make sure to check with local codes for trim measurements around the fireplace opening. Usually, there is a stone or tile area surrounding the fireplace opening.

Take careful measurements of trim and trim boxes and transfer to the wall surrounding, allowing for the thickness of the trim. Fix scrap lumber to the wall where your trim is to be fixed, by drilling and screwing the lumber in place. Once this is done the trim boxes can be fixed with finish nails to the scrap lumber. Having fixed your vertical trim to the sides of the opening we can now fix the mantel in place. With all the lumber trims in place you can stain or paint to your requirements to obtain a finished project.
