Woodworking Trim

Trim around doors has traditionally been wood. It functions to enliven the architecture, and for outside doors, increases curb appeal. In addition, the cost is less for maintenance, repair and replacement. High end wood can be left unpainted. Exterior wood trim can be painted. It does not require great technical skill. Exposed wood requires regular maintenance, as exposed wood can deteriorate, warp, may require extensive sanding. One way to avoid these problems is to consider wrapping vinyl or aluminum or steel to cover the wood. Only sound wood can be covered. The covering can look like painted wood.

Interior house trim does not require the maintenance of exterior trims. Decorative moldings can be used. You must be careful that the decorative molding blends in with the overall decor.

The primary purpose of floor trimming is to hold the floor installation in place. That does not preclude an aesthetic consideration. Just make sure, that regarding new installation that the contractor is very specific as to what trim will be used and the costs.

Costs can be a consideration. You might consider wood veneer. A very thin cut piece of wood 1/8" thick or less glued onto another material. There are many grades, grains and styles. The installation process requires less labor and, thus, less costs. Wood veneer doesn't warp.

There are a wide variety of woods that can be used. For example, teak is expensive but as a hardwood it can endure moisture and general wear and tear. Redwood is a softwood that is durable and beautiful but it does require maintenance.

In new construction or major floor or door renovations, since there are so many options, a professional contractor may be worth the costs.
