The value of a home goes up each and every time you install woodwork trim in your home. Historically doors have required a doorframe which people think only a carpenter can install. The installation of wood work around windows and doors just takes a little common sense and the right tools.

Wood trim takes practice and for the beginning craftsmen the installation of a door frame is a great place to start. Wood interior doors are easy to install as long as you have the right tools. The list of tools required is a electric 7 ½ inch hand saw, miter saw, nail gun, level, tape measure, hammer, 6 penny nails, shims, pencil, center punch and paint.

The wood trim is the wood that extends out from the door jamb. The wood trim can be of any desired width but typically is four inches wide with crown molding placed on the piece that goes over the top of the door jamb. The interior wood trim consists of three pieces of 1 by 4 inch material. You will also need a piece of crown molding. The first two pieces of 1 by 4 material are cut to the height of the door, approximately 81 inches, and the third piece is cut to the width of the door or 41 inches.
The crown molding is cut to fit on top of the piece of 1 by 4 that was cut for the top of the door. The cut 1 by 4 material is placed flush with the wall and covers the door jamb on each side of the door.

The project can sound daunting but with the purchase of any handy man book you can see and follow the pictures for complete understanding of the process described above. The most difficult part of the installation is the use of the miter box. This saw is used to cut the 45 degree angle on the crown molding material but with a little practice even this step is easy to accomplish. Wood trim is easy to install and can save you big money if you install it yourself.
