Like many other labor-intensive crafts, woodwork design is being lost. Wood molding can be used on the interior and exterior of your home. There are so many kinds and sizes of wood molding for you to choose from. You can take a plain piece of 2x4 and make it look like a piece of art. Of course, like anything else, the more detailed the design, the more expensive it is.
There is crown molding, which is generally used to close the gap between the ceiling and wall. To enhance the beauty of the crown molding, like they did in years past, you can place a board about 6 inches wide around the the circumference of the room along the wall and up against the ceiling. Then add some crown molding of your choice, and you have a custom design. You can do the same thing with the baseboards as well. The baseboard protects the wall against mops, brooms, vacuum cleaners, kids' stuff, and other things that might make contact with the walls.
To make it even simpler, you can buy the baseboard with the molding as one piece. Wood molding can also be used to enhance the surrounds, or mantle of a fireplace, dress up a bookcase, or put just the right touch to finish off those kitchen cabinets. When purchasing the pre-painted, pre-molded woodwork, they are normally painted with a polyurethane paint. The woodwork will never stain or warp when exposed to water, and the polyurethane protects the woodwork from mold and mildew.
