Spruce up my Kitchen

Installing kitchen cabinets is not an easy task and it is preferable to leave this task to professionals. Before starting the new project it is important to demolish the old cabinets and prepare the area prior to installation of the new ones.

Peinstallation must be done first and is often referred to as roughing in. Any damage done to the drywall in the roughing in stage of the project needs to be repaired prior to the new installation. With everything in its place and adjustments made, and the floors and walls cleaned, it is time to start installing the new cabinets, working from a layout plan, otherwise the project may end up either with not enough wall or not enough cabinets to fill it.

The most commonly used setup is the American method, which is generally a plywood box with a hardwood face frame fixed to the front. This sits on the floor with the bottom shelf of this cabinet usually two to four inches above the floor, but the sides go down to the floor. Using a level lay across the top of this cabinet can level it in. Using four wedges, called shims, one at each corner on the floor, you can raise or lower each corner to level the cabinet. Making sure the cabinet is in its correct position temporarily screw back to the wall. With the first cabinet in place, repeat the same steps on the next cabinet and so on down the line, at the same time fixing each cabinet to its neighbor making sure the face of each is flush to its next.
