If you get the opportunity to install a wooden fireplace mantel, make sure that when you take on the task, do the research; it could turn out to be a very gratifying experience. It could become a focal point of your living room, and also become a great conversation piece when you have guests over.
You should begin by going to several lumber yards and specialty woodwork shops to get some ideas what products are available to buy. Next, take the measurements around the fireplace and remember working with wood is more forgiving that working with a stone fireplace. Many fireplace builders have used a combination of wood and stone for a great effect; however, due to the heat generated you should do your research about the expansion and potential cracking of the stone.
Next, pick out the wooden trim and design of the mantle. Now it's time to refinish the wood with your choice of finishes for the effect you are trying to create. After you have your frame in place, it is relatively easy to install the mantle. Attach the mantle to the framework, either with wood screws or nails. You can cover any holes or nails with wood putty to give a nice clean finish to your work.
Once you do your homework, get your preparation in order, and even make a mistake or two, you have taken a major step in adding the fireplace mantel to the room. Many manufacturers are coming out with more and more prefabricated fireplaces, but there seems to be more metal options due to the cost factor. However, whether you do the work yourself or get someone with experience to help, the end justifies the means and the personal satisfaction rewards cannot be beat.
