People who choose to finish and restore woodwork around their homes will find whether it is a quick cleanup or complete finish there are remedies for a tired old wood finish. First, it takes an arsenal of scrapers, brushes and abrasive pads to take off the old finish of the molding of the woodwork.
If a person is blessed enough to have artful woodwork throughout their home, there are always ways to breathe new life into it with the proper cleaning and refurnishing methods. People must keep in mind when they have cherry, maple or pine wood they must use an aniline dye to uniform the color so stains will absorb evenly. The first step is to strip down the old wood finish with a wide bristled brush to paint on a thick coat of commercial stripper. The surface will take about 15 minutes to go from appearing glossy to dull, and remember to open the windows so the fumes are not inhaled. The next step is to take a dull scraper and, without too much pressure, begin stripping away to a soft desired finish.
The final changes consist of sealing the stripped woodwork with shellac and adding the preferred color to the wood. After reaching the desired color, start wiping the dry glaze with a couple more thin coats of the finishing glaze so you gain a stronger film. The final touch of restoration is to brush on a final coat of satin varnish, for a more full strength finish. All of the new woodwork inventions make this all easier for homeowners to gain a stronger and more consistently colored finish.
