If a carpenter has the right kind of tools he can carve all kinds of things in the trim and the corners of the fireplace. The trim around the fireplace can be made of different kinds of wood. Cedar and pine are the two best types for they bring out the beauty of the fireplace, plus cedar and pine have the fragrances that fireplaces carry. The wood trim around the fireplace should match the rest of the wood trim in the room. You can have your trim painted or stained. Painting is great but the paint covers up the grain of the wood. Staining the trim is beautiful; it carries a shine and you can still see the texture and grain in the wood. No matter if you paint it or stain it you should be able to clean it with soap and water.
