There are probably 300 or more types of wood trim for doors and windows. Price is the only thing that can limit your choices. There are basic wood trims with almost no carving to stain or paint. These are sometimes called "contractor grade". Painting has become the usual application in most homes as the price of the trim is higher the more intricate it is. Some wood will take the stain and be more like natural wood.
To change the look of any room, change the wood trim. The decision to have a more expensive look in the rooms can reflect a mood or change of furniture. The more elaborate trims have unique details milled into them to help create a new look. Cleaning your existing wood trim and using a coat of polyurethane will brighten your room enough to satisfy your needs. Or paint your existing wood trim to freshen the look.
Most wood trim in higher end homes take the style of the home into consideration, using carved trim to reflect a higher end home. These can be painted or stained depending on the character the contractor is wanting to use in that home. Two story homes with vaulted or tray ceilings are more elaborate and are enhanced by more intricate wood trims throughout. Coordinating the wood trim inside the home and the exterior, creates a grand feeling to the home. These homes use stains on all wood trim to reflect an elegant and custom look.
