Woodwork Finish

The finishing of woodwork is a tedious, time consuming task. It could be that last task of a project and time and care should be taken to complete the project correctly.

To complete the woodwork task, you must have all of your supplies at your fingertips. Supplies consists of the correct stains, varnish, and/or paint supplies, brushes, thinner or mineral spirits, soft clothes, and brooms and cleaning brushes. Some stains, thinner and minerals are flammable and toxic, therefore good safety habits should be followed. The area should be totally cleaned and must be smooth. Using the right sandpaper is important, as the correct grit and type of sandpaper must be used for finishing projects. To obtain a smooth finish sanding must be performed with the grain of the wood. The amount of sanding depends on the type of wood hard or soft. Soft wood absorbs a stain quickly and is more difficult to produce an even finish.

Depending on the type of material, it may be favorable to wash the area down with cleaning products. The cleaning products should be approved by the manufacturer of the final product you are finishing. After the area is cleaned up it is then time to finish the material. If the wood is to be stained it may be necessary to apply a couple of coats of stain. The more coats the darker the finished product will be. For woodwork that requires painting there are situations that will require up to three costs of paint. To avoid this additional cost and labor a primary coat is recommended.
