Now that you have found the perfect home, you may want to build your own kitchen cabinets. You will first have to come up with a design of how you would like the cabinets to look. You also have to decide where the appliances, such as the refrigerator, stove, dishwasher, and kitchen sink will be located for the most efficient layout. The electrical and plumbing schematics should be used to help decide where some of these units will go.
Some basic carpentry skills and the right tools will help with your kitchen cabinet project. Most cabinets are simple boxes made to the size you want for each unit. The boxes can be made of several materials, such as plywood, luan, or MDO board. These materials come in 4' x 8' sheets that have to be cut down to size. The hardest part will be making the fancy door and drawer fronts for each cabinet. The front of the boxes will be finished in a similar fashion to the finish product used on the doors. If you don't want to make the finished doors, they can be purchased already manufactured and attached to your box unit. The color and finish you use will still be your choice. Several different counter tops can be chosen from materials like tile, formica, granite, or corian.
The knowledge and satisfaction of knowing how your kitchen cabinets are built is well worth the time invested. It can also be a money saver since you are working on your own time.
