Woodwork Trim Around Doors and Floors

To complete a woodwork trim around doors and floors, you must consider the type of material to be used and what the final design will look like.

Tools will be required for the project. Some favorite tools and accessories for this type of project include a band saw, circular saw, jig saw, jointer, hammers, nails, and other special items for the project. A good guideline is to purchase the required tools when the material is being purchased. One trip to the store is smarter then making several trips.

There are various types of doors that could be installed including craftsman, hand-carved, sliding, double, French, rustic, wrought iron, and garden doors. The door selection often depends on the type of floors, including hardwood and laminate flooring.

For the final design, use the door as an example to choose the type of trim. Should the door trim include rosettes on the top left and right corners of the door frame? How wide should the trim be? There is a choice of 3 1/2”, 4”, or 4 1/2”. This decision can be based on the size of the floorboards currently installed.

The final product needs to have a finish applied and the correct stain, varnish, and/or paint supplies should be purchased along with the materials. Types of stain vary, such as natural, dark, antique, and natural light. Materials can be oak, pine, cedar, teak, or walnut wood. You can choose a size of quart, gallon, or five gallon. These decisions will affect the entire cost of the project and are important for budget considerations.
