The Hobby of Woodwork

The hobby of woodwork can involve collecting, selling and creating objects. For most people, the creation of the object is what is meant by woodworking. Once upon a time young people learned to work with wood as apprentices. During this time they worked with wood repeatedly until they developed a feeling for the wood. This repeated work with the wood is needed now for those wanting to learn how to create wood objects. These can be works of art or practical, needed items. The needed tools can be single use items or multi-purpose use tools.

17 basic tools are recommended. These include a drill, wrench, chisel, hand plane, hammer and hacksaw. The ideal wood for such projects are maple, oak and cherry. Begin with a simple project like a bookshelf or even a toy. Progress to more complex projects by following diagrams and directions found in woodwork magazines. Two such magazines are "Woodshop News" and "American Woodworker." Local lumberyards and home improvement centers often have classes to help the beginning woodcrafter.

The local public library will also have helpful books on wood crafting. The internet is helpful as well. A site such as woodcraftguide.com is set up for the beginner. This site not only has helpful links, but it also has helpful reminders and advice concerning the making of cabinets or even a chair. At Michaels.com the well-known craft store called Michael's has screens of ideas including materials needed and instructions to follow. Whether building a tree-shaped candy box for Christmas or an ABC-block toy, wood-working projects can be successfully completed with good plans, good tools, and the determination to create something special.
