Fireplace Woodwork Trim

Nothing adds more warmth to a family room than a wood mantel over the fireplace. It doesn’t matter whether it is a gas fireplace or the traditional wood burning fireplace, a wood mantel adds a comfortable feeling that is difficult to describe. Whether you are just sitting in front of the fireplace on a cold winter’s evening or hanging the children’s stockings for Christmas, the wood mantel adds the home touch that will always be remembered.

Many modern houses are constructed with brick fireplaces. Although they may be beautiful, they lack the warmth and comfort of a wooden mantel. It is a fairly simple project to add a wooden mantel to cover the brick and bring out the beauty of the room.

First, you need to decide on the type of wood that you want. Mantels can be made of any wood you choose. There are mantel construction kits you can buy that can make the project easier. These are commonly available in birch, oak, maple, cherry or pine. The price of the kit will increase with your choice of wood. Walnut and pecan wood mantels can be more pricey. The style you choose can also add to the price. Any of the woods you choose can be stained to fit into your decorative scheme more easily.

Fireplace mantels can also be made of pressed fiber board. These types are meant to be painted. They are usually less expensive, but can be very effectively matched to the room decor. The choices are many and require some study to get the effect you want for your room.
