Woodwork Finish

For most pieces of wood that are being worked on the thing that will make or break the work will be the way the wood is finished. If the finish is not perfect the most intricate piece of woodwork will not have the professional look that you desire no matter how good the wood work is. There are many woodwork finishes that you can use and depending on the color, texture, sheen and overall texture there is one that will suit you the best.

Before you are even ready to think about the finish you will be using, you need to prepare the wood to accept the finish you will be putting on it. Preparing wood involves the sanding of the wood to assure that it is clear of any imperfections or other knots that you think should be removed. Sanding is probably the most important step that many people avoid. After sanding you will then pick the finish that you like.

There are many types, from oils to paste, to shellac which is what most people choose. Shellac's come in many colors as well and give the wood a great looking, bright finish. There are additional woodwork finishes that will be effective in giving the wood an old-time look as well as some that make it appear natural. Take your time in picking out your finish and consult with those in the paint or hardware departments of your local store. They will be able to tell you which one to use for the look you desire.
