Woodwork Finish

There are several different ways to finish your woodworking project. You can use oil finishes instead of lacquer, varnish, polyurethane or any water based finish. Oil finishes are much easier to apply and do not show mistake as easy as other types of finishes. With an oil finish you cannot achieve a glass smooth finish on wood with open pores (like oak, mahogany etc.) like you can when applying a lacquer, varnish poly or other topcoat finish. Oil finishes penetrate the wood in order to work properly.

Once the finish penetrates, the solvents evaporate and the resins solidify actually making the wood itself harder. These are another type of woodwork finishing and that is done by wet sanding this can be done on open pored wood. To do this you first sand the wood with course than go to medium sand paper after that use fine grit sandpaper. Wipe off all the sawdust and then drench the wood with the oil of your choice. Next, use a wet dry sand paper a 320 grit this will aid in filling the pores, let dry than wipe off and resend with a nether piece of 320 sand paper just enough to remove any residue on the wood.

After all wiped down scuff with 0000 steel wool wipe down and apply another coat of oil continue to do this over and over until your woodwork project has the shine you want it to have.
