Advanced woodwork design requires a high degree of accuracy in measurements and precise cutting and joining of wood. A knowledge of drafting and blueprint reading is also good to have. Along with the knowledge you also need a descent sized workshop and quality tools.
With modern tools any type of designs are possible, but you need a large workshop with room to fit them all. They are also expensive and will take a while to be worth the money. There are plenty of training aids from books to magazines and CD's that can show you all you need to know. TV shows like the New Yankee Workshop are well produced and show you step by step how to complete a project. When starting out building advanced designs it is best to use cheap wood just in case mistakes are made. Once skill and confidence is gained then you can move up to the expensive woods with less worry about waste.
In the past most woodworking was self taught or handed down through generations. Today there are courses that can be taken that will teach you all you need to know in about a year. Most of the high quality furniture is still handmade and not done by machinery. When the shop is put together and you have your advanced design ready all that is needed is patience, organization and a dedication to detail. Once the project is successfully completed you will realize that the time spent was well worth it.
