Fireplaces provide real or imagined warmth to any room in which they are located. They may be wood burning, gas logs, or electric simulation, but the ambiance of the flickering flames is there. Beautiful wood trim may be used to enhance the appearance of the fireplace. The mantel shelf is the eye catching display place for pictures and treasured items.
If you are installing a new fireplace or remodeling the existing fireplace, adding beautiful wood trim will enhance the appearance. Before making a determination on the type of material to use, check with the local code officials to make certain that you meet all fire and housing code requirements. Woodwork trim comes in a variety of styles and materials. Some of the most common types of wood are poplar, pine, maple, red oak, alder, birch, or cherry wood. Poplar and pine could be painted. The hard woods like red oak, cherry, maple, birch, or alter have beautiful grains that lead to perfect staining. The key is to match or accompany the balance of the décor of your room.
You can do this as a “do it yourself” project. Basic tools such as a table saw, power miter saw, router table, and doweling jig are all that should be needed. Of course, a tape measure, hammer, and nails or screws will be needed also. Plans and cut lists are available from your local hardware or lumber supplier and can be adjusted to the dimensions of your own requirements. This can be a nice weekend project so enjoy.
