Woodwork Finish

There are several steps involved in finishing any wood project to completion. Taking your time between each step is just as important as the steps themselves. Patients is a must when it comes to attempting any woodwork finishing. Before you can begin to finish your wood project, you should practice the finish technique you have chosen on a scrap piece of wood. Decide on the type of protective finish you prefer. There are lacquers, shellacs, oils and varnishes to chose from. Also keep in mind that some protectors dry faster than others.

There are stains available to apply directly to the wood. The stain brings out the beauty of the grain in the wood. Some stains are oils while other can be diluted with water. There are light and dark stains. Some stains can be blended to change colors. Proper sanding of the wood will determine the out come of the woodwork finish. The wood needs to be sanded between each application of the chosen protector.

You will not have a neat finish if you do not wait for the protector to dry completely each time. You can use different types of protection to different areas of the wood project. Do a better woodwork finish on the part of the wood that will be seen the most. An easier style could be used on areas that aren't seen. A woodwork finish that is no longer used is the French Polish Technique. This technique is so involved that it has been replaced with a lessor labor style of finishing. No current finishing can duplicate the shine of the French Polish.
