The advanced woodworker, capable of producing a myriad of artful creations, may turn out a variety of items or focus on one area of woodworking. There is much to learn about this intriguing handcraft.
Novice woodworkers have a number of options to augment information and hone skills. A good working knowledge of methodology, basic techniques, technical jargon, equipment, safety rules, workshop design and set up for efficient workflow, and tools will facilitate the process and afford a greater level of enjoyment of the craft.
Skilled woodworkers (carpenters) are a wonderful resource to tap for tips, tricks, safety precautions, applications, and other useful information. Take advantage of any opportunity to watch a craftsperson at work. Read woodworking articles and “how to” guides. The Internet has many websites devoted to the craft of woodworking. Some websites offer woodworking design software and/or books on the subject. You will also see colorful illustrations of completed projects. This is an excellent way to get ideas to assist in decision making on just what you might like to tackle as a first venture. Take advantage of workshops and classes offered at schools and colleges.
If you are just getting your feet wet, start with a very simple project: a cutting board, easy bookshelves or bookcase, table napkin holder, wood coasters, candle holders, trivet, or any project that will not be too challenging for a beginner. As your skills develop, you will gain confidence. When working with wood, equipment, and tools, always keep safety at the forefront.
