When it comes to wood trim on floors and doors, the woodworking world is your oyster. You can go with pre-designed wood trims or you can work with a builder and design your own trims. When it comes to choosing the correct wood trim, you should choose the trim on a room to room basis. Wood trims can be made out of a variety of different woods including cherry, maple, mahogany, oak, cedar, even paint grade moldings. You can use a cherry wood trim in one room and a mahogany wood trim in another. The great thing about the different woods is that they can be stained or painted.
If you decide you would like to stain your wood trim, you are able to pick from a more wide selection of wood. The good thing about staining is that you can buy a cheaper wood and stain that to look like a more expensive wood. It is a great idea to go that route if you are going to use a wood trim around your floors. If you are going to use a wood trim around your doors, let’s say a dark trim, where people are more likely to see it close up, you may want to spend a bit more money on the real wood to get a more authentic look.
If you are planning on using a wood trim on an outside door or on exterior moldings, you should choose a harder wood, like a Spanish cedar, mahogany, or white oak. These are more stable and resist moisture better than the other wood choices. This is what you want, especially if you are going to make your wood trim ornate. You don’t want to have a gorgeous trim ruined by some rain!
