There are many simple woodworking designs that are not only easy, but quick to make. Step-by-step instructions that are simply written seem to be the key for the amateur woodworker. It is important not to become discouraged. Many professional woodworkers began simply as well, and with their help and experience you will make it through the learning curve.
There are computer programs available that have thousands of plans with step-by-step instructions, photos of the steps as well as diagrams that walk you through each step. Most of these programs have been designed with the beginner in mind. An easy project would be towel holders, they are considered to be one of the easiest projects to make. You only need 3 pieces of wood and a dowel rod to put the paper on. Not a lot of fancy do-dads, but it should look much better than the plastic ones. Other projects that can be simple are things like front door bread boxes, cookbook holders, and even wooden trash cans can be simply made.
If you happen to be a person who fails miserably when you try new projects, you are not alone. Some of the new woodworkers that have used the "Woodworking4Home" program have been amazed at what they have been able to accomplish. In some cases they said it was actually a pleasant experience to complete the project they choose.
